Dinesh Sharma Appointed Andaman and Nicobar Lieutenant Governor: President Droupadi Murmu has appointed BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma as the new Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The appointment was announced through a Rashtrapati Bhavan notification on 5 September 2026 and will take effect from the day Sharma assumes office.

Sharma, aged 62, succeeds Admiral D K Joshi (Retd.), who has served as the Union Territory’s Lieutenant Governor since 8 October 2017.

He is currently a Rajya Sabha member and serves as the Vice-Chairperson of the Upper House. His Rajya Sabha tenure is scheduled to end on 25 November 2026, making his appointment to the Union Territory administration particularly significant.

Sharma’s Response to the Appointment

Following the announcement, Sharma expressed gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with other senior BJP leaders.

He described the responsibility as more than a political appointment, emphasising his commitment to the Constitution, the nation and public service. He also pledged to discharge his responsibilities with dedication and sincerity.

Admiral D K Joshi’s Tenure

Admiral D K Joshi (Retd.) has served as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands since 8 October 2017.

His tenure has extended for nearly nine years, and Dinesh Sharma will take over the office after formally assuming charge.
