Who is BS Dhanoa
BS Dhanoa and His Role in Operation Safed Sagar: Birender Singh Dhanoa, popularly known as BS Dhanoa, is a former Indian Air Force fighter pilot who played an important role during the Kargil War of 1999. He was commissioned into the IAF as a fighter pilot in June 1978 and later rose to become the Chief of the Air Staff.
During his career, Dhanoa flew several frontline aircraft, including the MiG-21, Jaguar, MiG-29 and Su-30MKI. He also served as a flying instructor, combining operational experience with training responsibilities.

Dhanoa and the Golden Arrows
During the Kargil conflict, Dhanoa commanded No. 17 Squadron of the Indian Air Force, popularly known as the Golden Arrows.
The squadron operated MiG-21 fighter aircraft and participated in Operation Safed Sagar, the IAF’s air campaign conducted alongside the Indian Army during the Kargil War.
Operation Safed Sagar
The Kargil conflict created an exceptionally difficult environment for air operations. Indian fighter pilots had to operate over high-altitude mountainous terrain, while dealing with challenging weather, visibility and target-location conditions.
Under Dhanoa’s leadership, the Golden Arrows adapted their operational methods to the demanding battlefield. The squadron developed specialised techniques for night bombing at high altitudes, demonstrating the importance of innovation and precision during mountain warfare.
The squadron was subsequently recognised as the best fighter squadron of HQ Western Air Command. Dhanoa received the Yudh Seva Medal and Vayu Sena Medal for his service during the conflict.

From Fighter Pilot to Air Chief
Dhanoa continued to hold important command and staff positions after the Kargil War. His assignments included responsibilities at Air Headquarters and the Western and Eastern Air Commands.
He became the Chief of the Air Staff in December 2016 and served until September 2019. In 2019, he also served as the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee.
Dhanoa and the 2019 Balakot Operation
During Dhanoa’s tenure as Air Chief, the Indian Air Force conducted the Balakot air strikes in February 2019 following the Pulwama terrorist attack.
His career therefore covered several stages of India’s modern air warfare, from flying frontline fighters and commanding a squadron during Kargil to leading the entire Indian Air Force.
Dhanoa’s Connection with Safed Sagar
Dhanoa’s association with Operation Safed Sagar has gained renewed public attention through the Netflix series based on the operation. He has also been associated with the production as an adviser and has contributed to discussions about the IAF’s role during the Kargil War.
His journey from a fighter pilot to Air Chief makes him a significant figure in the history of India’s post-independence military aviation.
