BrahMos-Armed Su-30MKI Fleet Enhances India’s Air Strike Capability: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has equipped around 40 Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft with the air-launched BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, significantly enhancing India’s long-range precision strike capability. The integration programme, confirmed by BrahMos Aerospace, marks another major step in strengthening India’s indigenous defence preparedness.
The upgraded aircraft can carry out stand-off attacks on strategic targets while remaining outside the effective range of enemy air defence systems, thereby improving operational survivability.

Su-30MKI and BrahMos Integration

Key Features of the Strike Platform
Around 40 Su-30MKI aircraft are now operationally equipped with the BrahMos missile. The fighter has an operational range of nearly 3,000 km, while the air-launched BrahMos offers a strike range of approximately 450 km.
The combination enables precision stand-off attacks against strategic targets without requiring aircraft to enter heavily defended enemy airspace. It is effective against both land-based installations and naval assets.

Air-Launched BrahMos Missile
The BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia through BrahMos Aerospace. The air-launched version has been specially modified for deployment from the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft.
The missile weighs around 2.5 tonnes, travels at speeds of Mach 2.8–3.0, and delivers highly accurate strikes against strategic targets. Its supersonic speed makes interception extremely difficult, enhancing India’s deterrence capability.
BrahMos-NG Development
BrahMos Aerospace, in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is developing the BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) missile. The upcoming version will feature a lighter design, improved avionics, Artificial Intelligence-based guidance, enhanced precision, and compatibility with multiple fighter aircraft.
The new missile is expected to increase operational flexibility while enabling more aircraft to carry advanced supersonic cruise missiles.
