Bodhana Sivanandan Achieves WGM Norms
Bodhana Sivanandan Sets New Age Mark in Women’s Chess: Bodhana Sivanandan, an 11-year-old Indian-born chess player representing England, has become the youngest player to complete the requirements for the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title.
She secured her third and final WGM norm during the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad 2026 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Bodhana played for England on Board 1 in the women’s competition and scored 8 points from 11 games.
Static GK fact: The FIDE title of Woman Grandmaster is a lifetime title awarded by the international chess governing body to players who meet the prescribed title requirements.
New Youngest WGM Record
Bodhana’s achievement surpassed the previous age benchmark associated with Kateryna Lagno, who achieved the WGM title at the age of 12.
The accomplishment is specifically related to the Woman Grandmaster title. It should not be confused with the open Grandmaster (GM) title, which is available to players of all genders and has different qualification requirements.
Hou Yifan, former Women’s World Champion, also earned the WGM title at age 12 and later became the youngest woman to obtain the open GM title at 14.
Additional International Master Progress
Bodhana also secured another International Master (IM) norm at the Samarkand Olympiad.
The IM title is an open FIDE title, meaning it is available to both male and female players. Under the standard title requirements, a player generally needs three IM norms and a FIDE rating of at least 2400 to qualify for the title.
The additional norm therefore represents another step in Bodhana’s progress towards the open International Master title.
Static GK Tip: FIDE’s three principal open over-the-board titles are Grandmaster (GM), International Master (IM) and FIDE Master (FM). Their women’s counterparts include WGM, WIM and WFM.
Performance at Chess Olympiad 2026
Bodhana participated in all 11 rounds of the women’s tournament for England. Her score included six victories, making her one of the notable individual performers on the first board.
The 2026 Chess Olympiad was hosted in Samarkand during September 2026, with separate open and women’s competitions conducted over 11 classical rounds.
The women’s section recorded 189 participating teams, reflecting the global scale of the tournament.
From Tamil Nadu Roots to British Chess
Bodhana was born in India and grew up in London, with family roots connected to Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tamil Nadu.
She began playing chess during the COVID-19 pandemic and progressed rapidly through the British chess system. Her rise included becoming the youngest female player to defeat a Grandmaster at the 2025 British Chess Championships.
In 2026, she also became the youngest woman to win the British chess championship.
A Rapid Rise in International Chess
Bodhana’s achievements have attracted attention from FIDE, which had identified her as one of the young players to watch ahead of the 2026 Olympiad.
Her latest accomplishment adds another milestone to her rapid development, combining a record-setting WGM achievement with continued progress towards an open international title.
