The team followed a systematic scientific procedure that included:
- Collecting wood samples from the secondary trunk and an ancient primary branch.
- Extracting alpha-cellulose, the most stable component of plant cell walls.
- Selecting samples close to the pith, representing the earliest stage of growth.
- Performing Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating.
- Calibrating the results using the IntCal20 calibration curve and OxCal software.
This methodology produced a highly accurate estimate of the tree’s age.
Discovery Revises Local History
The scientific findings challenge the long-held belief that the banyan tree was planted near the historic Burra Bunglow, a structure believed to date back only 300–350 years.
The research confirms that the tree existed several centuries before the construction of the building. Scientists believe it was originally part of a natural forest that once covered the region and has witnessed numerous historical developments over the last seven centuries.
