ASISSE Survey Strengthens India Services Data

Launch of a new statistical initiative

ASISSE Survey Strengthens India Services Data: India launched the Annual Survey of Incorporated Services Sector Enterprises (ASISSE) in April 2026. It is conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

The survey aims to build a comprehensive database on the incorporated services sector. It fills a major gap in India’s economic data system.

Importance of services sector data

The services sector contributes over 50% to India’s GDP and employs millions. Despite its dominance, detailed official data has remained limited.

ASISSE addresses this gap by providing structured and reliable information. It supports evidence-based policymaking and sectoral performance tracking.

Static GK fact: The services sector in India includes IT, banking, tourism, education, and healthcare, forming the largest share of GDP.

Coverage and scope of ASISSE

The survey covers major service industries such as trade, transport, hospitality, IT, education, and healthcare. It includes enterprises registered under the Companies Act, 2013 and the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008.

The reference period is the financial year 2024–25, ensuring recent and relevant data.

Key features of ASISSE 2026

ASISSE is the first nationwide survey focused exclusively on incorporated service enterprises. It covers all States and Union Territories.

The sample size includes over 1.21 lakh enterprises, making it one of the largest surveys in this domain. The GSTN database is used as the sampling framework.

Data collection is conducted through a secure web-based portal, ensuring efficiency and transparency.

Complementing existing surveys

ASISSE completes India’s broader statistical framework. It complements the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE).

Together, these surveys now provide a holistic view of the non-agricultural economy. This integration strengthens national data systems.

Static GK Tip: The Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) is India’s primary source of industrial statistics for the manufacturing sector.

Know Your Survey initiative

To improve participation, NSO released the guide “Know Your Survey: A User Guide to ASISSE.” It explains objectives, definitions, and reporting methods in simple terms.

The guide also clarifies frequently asked questions, enhancing transparency and compliance among enterprises.

Legal framework and data security

ASISSE is conducted under the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008 (amended 2017) and the Jan Vishwas Act, 2023. These laws ensure legal backing and compliance.

Data is collected through a secure digital system, ensuring confidentiality and reliability of information.

Way forward

ASISSE will improve policy formulation, economic planning, and sectoral analysis. It strengthens India’s move towards a data-driven governance model.

In the long run, accurate service sector data will enhance economic resilience and global competitiveness.
