Annapurni Subramaniam Receives Global Space Science Honour: Dr. Annapurni Subramaniam, a renowned Indian astrophysicist, has been awarded the COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal 2026, one of the most respected international honours in space research. The announcement was made during the 46th COSPAR Scientific Assembly held in Florence, Italy, on 3 August 2026.

The award marks a historic achievement as she became the first Indian woman scientist and the fourth Indian overall to receive this prestigious recognition. Her achievement highlights India’s growing contribution to global astrophysics and space science.

About the COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal

The COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal was instituted in 1990 to honour the legacy of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India’s space programme. The award is jointly presented by the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

It recognises scientists from developing countries who have made outstanding contributions to space research, particularly through significant scientific work carried out during the five years preceding the COSPAR Scientific Assembly.

Who is Annapurni Subramaniam

She currently serves as the Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru, and also holds additional charge as the Director of the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru.

Her scientific work has significantly improved understanding of the formation, evolution, and structure of nearby galaxies, earning her international recognition in astrophysical research.
