Static GK fact: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and was established in 1865.

Purpose of the Commission

The commission aims to develop practical recommendations for the ethical use of AI while encouraging international cooperation. It seeks to balance innovation with accountability and ensure that AI technologies benefit people across both developed and developing nations.

Its major objectives include promoting responsible AI governance, expanding digital access, reducing the digital divide, encouraging collaboration among stakeholders, and supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through AI-driven solutions.

Prominent Indian Members

India has secured significant representation in the founding commission through four distinguished industry leaders.

The Indian members are Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries; Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises; Lakshmi N. The commission’s recommendations are expected to influence future global standards on AI governance, responsible innovation, and cross-border cooperation.
