Scheme Overview
PM Shram Yogi Maandhan Yojana Securing Unorganized Workers Future: The Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) is a voluntary pension scheme launched in 2019 to provide financial security to unorganized workers. It targets individuals who lack formal pension coverage like EPFO or NPS.
Under this scheme, workers contribute a small monthly amount and receive a fixed pension of ₹3000 per month after the age of 60 years. The Central Government matches the contribution, doubling the savings over time.
Static GK fact: The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.
Contribution Structure
The contribution depends on the age at which a worker joins the scheme. Younger entrants pay lower monthly contributions, making it affordable for low-income individuals.
For example, a person joining at 18 years contributes ₹55 per month, while someone joining at 40 years contributes ₹200 per month. This flexibility ensures wider participation among workers.
The pension is guaranteed and continues for the lifetime of the beneficiary after retirement.
Eligibility Criteria
To enroll in the PM-SYM scheme, individuals must fulfill certain conditions. The scheme is specifically designed for economically weaker sections.
Eligible individuals must be aged between 18 to 40 years and have a monthly income of ₹15,000 or less. They should not be members of EPFO, ESIC, or NPS.
The scheme mainly benefits street vendors, construction workers, agricultural labourers, domestic workers, and small shop owners.
Static GK Tip: India’s unorganized sector constitutes nearly 90% of the total workforce, highlighting the need for such schemes.
Enrollment Process
The enrollment process is simple and accessible across the country. Workers can register through Common Service Centers (CSCs) or via the official online portal.
Applicants need basic documents like Aadhaar card and savings bank account details. The contribution is auto-debited monthly, ensuring regular savings without manual effort.
As of March 2026, more than 52.5 lakh workers have enrolled, reflecting growing awareness and acceptance.
Key Benefits
The scheme offers multiple benefits beyond just a pension. It acts as a financial safety net for workers without formal retirement plans.
Key advantages include a guaranteed ₹3000 monthly pension, equal government contribution, and lifetime income security. In case of the subscriber’s death, the spouse can continue the scheme or receive benefits.
This makes PM-SYM an effective tool for reducing old-age poverty in India.
Importance in Indian Economy
India’s workforce is largely informal, with limited access to social security. Schemes like PM-SYM play a crucial role in ensuring economic stability and dignity in old age.
Other initiatives like the Atal Pension Yojana and National Pension System complement this effort by expanding pension coverage.
Together, these schemes strengthen India’s social security framework and promote inclusive growth.
