Background and Launch
Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses: The Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses was announced in the Union Budget 2025–26 and officially approved on 1st October 2025. It is a focused initiative under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare aimed at strengthening India’s pulse sector.
Recently, Bihar launched its first-ever structured pulse procurement initiative, marking a significant step in implementing this mission at the state level.
Static GK fact: India is the largest producer and consumer of pulses in the world, yet it also imports pulses to meet domestic demand.
Objective of the Mission
The core aim is to achieve self-sufficiency in pulses production. The mission focuses on reducing import dependence while ensuring sustainable income growth for farmers.
It also promotes nutritional security, as pulses are a major source of protein in the Indian diet, especially for vegetarians.
Static GK Tip: Pulses are known as “poor man’s protein” due to their high nutritional value and affordability.
Targets and Timeline
The mission has set an ambitious target to scale up production to 350 lakh tonnes by 2030–31. Additionally, the cultivation area is expected to expand to 310 lakh hectares.
The total duration of the mission is 6 years, from 2025–26 to 2030–31, ensuring a structured and time-bound implementation.
Static GK fact: India’s major pulse-producing states include Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka.
Focus Crops
The mission primarily focuses on key pulse crops such as Tur/Arhar (pigeon pea), Urad (black gram), and Masoor (red lentil). These crops are widely cultivated and have high domestic demand.
Enhancing productivity of these crops through better seeds, irrigation, and technology is a major strategy under the mission.
Static GK Tip: Arhar (Tur) is one of the most widely consumed pulses in India and is a staple in dishes like dal.
Bihar’s Role in Implementation
The launch of a structured procurement system in Bihar ensures that farmers receive Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their produce. This reduces market risk and encourages higher cultivation of pulses.
It also strengthens the public procurement mechanism, similar to systems used for rice and wheat.
Static GK fact: MSP is announced by the Government of India based on recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).
Significance and Way Forward
The mission is expected to improve food security, reduce foreign exchange expenditure on imports, and enhance farmer profitability. It also supports crop diversification, reducing over-dependence on cereals.
However, challenges like climate variability, low productivity, and market fluctuations must be addressed through better infrastructure and policy support.
