High Court Sittings Approved for Ladakh
Ladakh to Get High Court Bench After President’s Approval: President Droupadi Murmu has notified the Union Territory of Ladakh (Sitting of the Bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Ladakh) Regulation, 2026.
The regulation was issued on August 27, 2026, by the Ministry of Law and Justice and published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary).
The move will enable sittings of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court within Ladakh, improving access to higher judicial remedies for people living in the Union Territory.
Why Is the High Court Bench Important?
Ladakh’s remote and difficult geographical conditions can make travelling outside the Union Territory for court proceedings expensive and time-consuming.
The new arrangement is expected to:
- Reduce travel costs and delays for litigants
- Improve access to justice
- Make court proceedings more accessible
- Assist advocates and other legal stakeholders
- Bring higher judicial remedies closer to citizens
What Does the New Regulation Provide?
The principal seat of the common High Court will remain unchanged.
However, the Chief Justice may direct that specified locations in Ladakh become venues for sittings of judges and divisions of the High Court, subject to the permission of the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.
The Chief Justice may also direct that particular cases or categories of cases from Ladakh be heard at Srinagar or Jammu, depending on requirements.
When Will It Come Into Force?
Although President Murmu notified the regulation on August 27, 2026, it will come into effect from a date that will be notified in the Official Gazette by the Administrator of Ladakh.
The Union Cabinet had approved the proposal on August 20, 2026, paving the way for High Court sittings in Ladakh.
Key Constitutional and Administrative Point
The arrangement does not create a separate High Court for Ladakh.
Instead, it provides for sittings of the existing common High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh within the Union Territory of Ladakh.
