Jamun Evolution Origin Linked to India: A recent scientific study has identified India as the origin and early diversification centre of Jamun (Syzygium). The research traces its lineage back to nearly 80 million years, significantly older than previous estimates.
The study conducted by the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences under the Department of Science and Technology challenges earlier theories. Earlier, scientists believed that the genus originated in Australia or Southeast Asia around 51 million years ago.

As the Indian plate moved northwards after breaking away from Gondwana, it carried plant species that later spread to other regions.
