India Builds First Rock Check Dam on the Indus River in Ladakh: India has inaugurated its first Rock Check Dam on the Indus River near Upshi in Leh district, Ladakh, to improve water conservation and irrigation in the cold desert region. The project is part of the Sindhu Jal Samriddhi Abhiyan (SJSA) and has been built entirely using locally available natural rocks without cement or concrete.

What is a Rock Check Dam?

Unlike conventional dams, it requires no cement or concrete, making it a low-cost, eco-friendly, and sustainable solution for water conservation. The project also minimizes environmental disturbance while enhancing river water storage.
Key Features of the Project
The Rock Check Dam has been built near Upshi, about 44 km from Leh, at an altitude of approximately 11,400 feet.
The structure uses rocks collected from the riverbed and nearby areas, reducing construction costs and environmental impact. It increases river depth, improves water storage capacity, and helps supply irrigation water to nearby agricultural fields.

Despite the presence of the Indus River, many parts of Ladakh face seasonal water shortages because river levels often remain shallow, making it difficult to lift water to higher agricultural lands.
