Himachal Pradesh Gets Its First Ozone Water Project

Dehra Introduces Ozone Technology for Safer Drinking Water: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has inaugurated the state’s first drinking-water treatment project based on ozone technology at Dehra in Kangra district. The project has been developed with an allocation of ₹46 crore to improve drinking-water quality.

The initiative uses ozone gas for water disinfection and is also intended to improve the taste of treated water. Following its implementation in Dehra, the technology is proposed to be extended to other parts of the state.

Static GK fact: Kangra is one of the districts of Himachal Pradesh and is known for the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar mountain range.

How Ozone Treatment Works

Ozone is a powerful oxidising agent that can be used to disinfect water by reducing harmful microorganisms and oxidising certain contaminants. Unlike conventional chlorination, ozone treatment does not primarily depend on adding chlorine-based disinfectants to the water.

The Dehra project therefore represents a technological upgrade in the state’s drinking-water infrastructure. Its expansion could help improve the quality and reliability of treated water in additional locations.

Static GK Tip: Ozone (O₃) is a triatomic form of oxygen. In water treatment, its strong oxidation properties make it useful for disinfection.

New Welfare Scheme Announced

During the programme, the Chief Minister also highlighted the Mukhyamantri Ka Apna Parivar Sukhi Parivar Yojana. Surveys for identifying eligible financially weaker families have begun in panchayats, with the scheme scheduled for launch from October 2.

Under the announced provisions, eligible families will receive financial assistance along with 300 units of free electricity. The initiative is aimed at providing additional support to economically vulnerable households.

Forest Conservation Gets Community Support

The Chief Minister also discussed the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana, which encourages participation of youth and women in forest plantation and protection activities. Self-help groups involved in plantation work are eligible for financial assistance.

The programme includes an allocation of ₹1.20 lakh for self-help groups along with incentives linked to the survival of planted trees. Such community-based measures seek to combine livelihood opportunities with ecological conservation.

Development Push for Dehra

The government has also outlined measures covering education, healthcare-related infrastructure and veterinary services in the Dehra region. CBSE schools have been introduced in the state, with further expansion planned to strengthen educational facilities.

A veterinary hospital at Baddal Thor has also been established to improve animal healthcare services. The state government has assured that adequate funds will be made available for development works in the Dehra constituency.

Focus on Water and Sustainable Development

The Dehra ozone-based water project combines modern water-treatment technology with wider development initiatives in the region. Its proposed expansion across Himachal Pradesh could make ozone-based disinfection an important component of the state’s future drinking-water infrastructure.

At the same time, welfare support, forest conservation, education and veterinary facilities indicate a broader development approach focused on improving both public services and local living conditions.
