Ministry Launches New Digital Platforms for Senior Citizens
Centre Launches JEEVAN App and SHATAYU Dashboard to Strengthen Elder Care: The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched two digital initiatives—the JEEVAN mobile application and the SHATAYU Geriatric Caregiver Dashboard—to improve the quality of life of senior citizens across India. The platforms were launched on 21 May 2026 by Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar.
These initiatives aim to enhance elderly welfare, emergency support, healthcare access, caregiving services, and social inclusion by leveraging digital technology.
Static GK fact: The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is the nodal ministry responsible for the welfare, empowerment, and social justice of vulnerable sections of society, including senior citizens.
JEEVAN App for Senior Citizen Welfare
The JEEVAN App, which stands for Joint Elderly Empowerment & Virtual Assistance Network, has been developed as a one-stop digital platform dedicated to senior citizens. It seeks to simplify access to government welfare services and provide timely support through a user-friendly mobile application.
The platform is designed to make elderly care more accessible, efficient, and citizen-centric while promoting independent and dignified living for senior citizens.
Key Features of the JEEVAN App
The application offers multiple services that support the day-to-day needs of elderly citizens. Users can access information on government welfare schemes, locate government-supported senior citizen homes, obtain healthcare-related information, and receive emergency assistance when required.
The app also promotes social inclusion by connecting senior citizens with support services and community-based initiatives through a single digital interface.
Static GK Tip: The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 provides legal protection for the maintenance and welfare of senior citizens in India.
SHATAYU Dashboard for Geriatric Care
Along with the JEEVAN App, the Ministry introduced the SHATAYU Dashboard, which stands for Senior Holistic Care Assistance and Training For Your Utility. The dashboard has been developed to strengthen India’s growing geriatric caregiving ecosystem.
It provides information on trained geriatric caregivers available across districts and states, making it easier for families and senior citizens to identify suitable caregiving services.
Strengthening India’s Care Economy
The two platforms were launched during the national workshop on “Creating a Well-Functioning Care Economy.” The initiative reflects the government’s vision of using digital technology to improve services related to elder care, home-based healthcare, disability support, community caregiving, and domestic care services.
By creating a technology-enabled care ecosystem, the government aims to improve service delivery while supporting the growing demand for organised caregiving.
Static GK fact: India’s elderly population (aged 60 years and above) is projected to increase significantly in the coming decades, making geriatric healthcare and caregiving important public policy priorities.
Importance of the Initiative
India is experiencing a steady rise in its senior citizen population due to increasing life expectancy and demographic changes. This has created a greater need for accessible healthcare, trained caregivers, and coordinated welfare services.
The JEEVAN App and SHATAYU Dashboard are expected to improve access to welfare schemes, strengthen caregiver coordination, enhance emergency response, and promote technology-driven elder care across the country.
Static GK Tip: Article 41 of the Constitution of India directs the State to make effective provisions for public assistance in cases of old age, sickness, disability, and unemployment, subject to its economic capacity.
