National Teachers Award Ceremony in New Delhi
President Droupadi Murmu to Honour 48 Teachers with National Awards 2026: President Droupadi Murmu will confer the National Teachers Award 2026 on 48 school teachers at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on September 5, 2026.
The ceremony is being organised by the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education. It coincides with Teachers’ Day, which is observed annually across India on September 5.
The awards recognise teachers who have demonstrated exceptional commitment, innovation and effectiveness in school education.
48 Teachers Selected for the Honour
The 48 awardees include 26 men and 22 women. They represent 27 States, 7 Union Territories and 6 Central Government organisations.
The selected teachers come from government schools, central schools and other recognised educational institutions across the country.
Among the organisations represented are Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Sainik Schools, CBSE, CISCE and Eklavya Model Residential Schools.
Selection Through Three-Stage Process
The recipients were chosen through a three-stage online selection process.
The nomination window for the 2026 National Teachers Awards remained open from June 15 to July 20, 2026.
The selection process evaluates teachers on parameters such as innovation in teaching, classroom effectiveness, contribution to school development and wider educational impact.
Tamil Nadu Teacher Among Awardees
Shri Thanga Raj from Tamil Nadu has been selected for the National Teachers Award 2026.
He is associated with Panchayat Union Primary School, Puliyampatti.
Other awardees include teachers from States and Union Territories such as Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi, Ladakh, Chandigarh and Puducherry.
Teachers’ Day Significance
India celebrates Teachers’ Day on September 5 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
When his students proposed celebrating his birthday, Radhakrishnan reportedly suggested that the day should instead be observed in honour of teachers.
Static GK fact: Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, and served as the first Vice-President and second President of India.
Teachers’ Day has been officially observed in India since 1962.
National Recognition for Educational Excellence
The National Teachers Award recognises educators who contribute significantly to improving learning outcomes and developing innovative teaching practices.
It also highlights the role of teachers in promoting inclusive education, creativity, technology-based learning and student development.
Apart from the National Teachers Award, several institutions and State governments also recognise outstanding teachers through their own awards.
Ceremony to Be Broadcast Live
The National Teachers Award 2026 ceremony will be telecast through Doordarshan and SWAYAM PRABHA.
The programme will also be available through official government webcasting platforms, allowing students, educators and the public to follow the event.
