Lahore Receives the SCO Cultural Honour

Lahore Becomes SCO Tourism and Cultural Capital 2026–27: Lahore, the historic capital of Pakistan’s Punjab Province, has been designated the SCO Tourism and Cultural Capital for 2026–27. The announcement was made during the 26th SCO Council of Heads of State meeting held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The designation places Lahore at the centre of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s efforts to promote tourism, heritage conservation and cultural interaction among member countries.

During the year, Lahore is expected to host and feature cultural programmes designed to highlight its historical legacy while encouraging greater people-to-people exchanges across the SCO region.

Why Lahore Was Chosen

Lahore is one of the historically significant cities of South Asia, with layers of Mughal, Sufi and colonial heritage. Its cultural landscape includes major monuments and historic areas that reflect different periods of the city’s development.

Among its best-known landmarks are the Lahore Fort, Shalimar Gardens, Badshahi Mosque and the Walled City of Lahore.

The SCO Tourism and Cultural Capital initiative seeks to use prominent cities to strengthen tourism cooperation, cultural exchanges and heritage preservation among SCO members.

As the designated capital for 2026–27, Lahore will serve as a venue and showcase for cultural activities involving SCO countries. These programmes are intended to increase awareness of the city’s heritage while strengthening cultural links between participating nations.

The initiative also supports the broader SCO objective of improving cooperation beyond traditional security and economic areas.

Pakistan Takes SCO Chairmanship

Lahore’s designation coincides with Pakistan assuming the SCO chairmanship for 2026–27. Pakistan has adopted the theme “Turning Vision into Action: Connectivity, Innovation and Shared Prosperity” for its chairmanship.

As chair, Pakistan will have an important role in coordinating SCO meetings and activities during the year. Its priorities include cooperation in areas such as connectivity, tourism, culture and economic development.

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is an intergovernmental organisation established in 2001. It focuses on cooperation among Eurasian countries across areas including security, economic development, connectivity and cultural interaction.

The SCO’s members include China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran. Belarus became a full member in 2024.

The SCO Council of Heads of State is the organisation’s supreme decision-making body.
