IST Rules 2026 Give Indian Standard Time Legal Force Across India: The Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 have made Indian Standard Time (IST) a legally enforceable reference for official, commercial and critical systems in India.

CSIR-NPL Maintains IST
The CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL) is India’s National Metrology Institute and is responsible for maintaining and disseminating the country’s official time standard.
Its master timing infrastructure provides the scientific reference to which other authorised systems can be traced.

India’s experience with limited access to foreign navigation support during the Kargil conflict strengthened the case for developing an independent navigation and timing capability.

It also supports critical infrastructure such as telecom networks, financial systems, transport systems and power grids.
Businesses Must Use Approved Sources
Organisations will need to ensure that their internal clocks and computer systems obtain time from an approved IST-linked source.
The requirement concerns the actual system clock, not merely the time shown on a display.
Institutions may still display other time zones for convenience, but IST must remain the underlying official reference.

Accurate timestamps are essential when investigators reconstruct cyberattacks, fraud, financial transactions or other disputed events.
