India and Belgium Expand Partnership into Defence and Advanced Technology: India and Belgium have agreed to deepen cooperation across defence, security, trade, semiconductors, clean energy and maritime sectors during Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s visit to India from September 2 to 4, 2026. It was his first visit to India after becoming Belgium’s Prime Minister in February 2025.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bart De Wever held bilateral talks covering economic ties, strategic technologies, security and global developments. Both sides also reaffirmed the importance of stronger India-European Union cooperation.

Economic Partnership Remains Strong

Trade and investment have traditionally formed the foundation of India-Belgium relations. Antwerp, one of the world’s major diamond trading centres, has long maintained strong commercial links with Mumbai and Surat.

The two governments decided to make the India-Belgium Business Forum a regular mechanism and establish an Investment Fast-Track Mechanism for Belgian companies operating in India.

They have also set a target of doubling bilateral trade over the next five years.

Defence Cooperation Gets New Framework

Defence and security emerged as major pillars of the renewed partnership. The two countries signed a Letter of Intent on Defence Cooperation to create a structured framework for regular exchanges.

It covers staff talks, military education and training, research cooperation and defence-industrial partnerships. The two sides also agreed to expand cooperation in maritime security, emerging technologies and the Indo-Pacific.

India and Belgium further agreed to strengthen intelligence sharing and cooperation between security agencies against crime and terrorism.

Semiconductors and Clean Energy Gain Priority

Semiconductors have become an important new area of engagement. India and Belgium plan to connect Belgium’s IMEC research institute with India’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem.

Both sides also signed an MoU on Renewable Energy and agreed to cooperate in the processing and recycling of critical minerals.

These initiatives are intended to strengthen resilient supply chains and support the transition towards cleaner technologies.

Maritime Cooperation Expands

India and Belgium recognised the strategic importance of maritime and port cooperation. Areas identified include port development, logistics, connectivity, dredging and offshore wind infrastructure.

Secure shipping routes are particularly important for both economies because of their dependence on international trade and global supply chains.

Fintech and Innovation Receive Support

The two countries agreed to strengthen coordination among their financial, fintech and regulatory institutions. They also plan to improve links between start-ups, universities and research institutions.

Cooperation in semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, critical minerals and sustainable industries reflects the widening scope of the economic relationship.

Wider Strategic Significance

India and Belgium also discussed developments in Ukraine and West Asia, supporting dialogue, diplomacy and adherence to the UN Charter and international law. They stressed the importance of safe and uninterrupted maritime shipping.

The partnership is therefore evolving beyond traditional trade into a broader relationship involving defence manufacturing, advanced technology, clean energy and maritime security.
