Opening Kashmir’s Winter Wonderland
Z-Morh Tunnel: Year-Round Access Transforms Life in Kashmir: For decades, Sonamarg, one of Kashmir’s most breathtaking spots, would fall silent every winter. Snow would pile up high, blocking roads and freezing out tourism, trade, and emergency access. But that’s finally changing. With the near-completion of the Z-Morh Tunnel, a 6.4-km passage carved through the mountains, this region is about to become a year-round destination.
Now, even when the valley is blanketed in snow, people can reach Sonamarg without worry. That means tourists can enjoy snow treks and hot chai in the hills in January, not just June.
Why the Tunnel Matters to Locals
Imagine being a farmer with fresh apples ready to sell—but no way to transport them. Or think of a family that needs to reach a hospital in Srinagar during a blizzard. These are not rare cases. For many residents in and around Ganderbal district, cut-off roads have long made life harder than it should be.
The Z-Morh Tunnel, connecting Sonamarg with Kangan, offers relief. It provides not just comfort, but reliable access for healthcare, education, and livelihoods, even when temperatures drop below freezing.
A Boost for Defence and Tourism
This tunnel isn’t just about weekend getaways. It’s part of a larger plan to strengthen India’s strategic routes. Alongside the Zojila Tunnel, which will soon link Sonamarg to Drass in Ladakh, Z-Morh improves movement for the Indian Army, especially in winter when airlifting supplies is risky and expensive.
It also helps with disaster response and troop deployment in border regions. And for tourists, it means Sonamarg could become India’s next snow-sports hub, with ski resorts, snowboarding trails, and winter homestays.
The Journey Wasn’t Smooth
Started in 2012, the Z-Morh project saw delays, contractor changes, and missed deadlines. But with APCO Infratech and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) stepping in, work picked up speed. Though the tunnel was supposed to open fully in 2023, a soft opening in February 2024 brought hope. The final inauguration was delayed due to election protocols but is expected soon.
Now, the path is nearly clear—literally and symbolically.
What Lies Ahead for Kashmir
This tunnel is only the beginning. It can shorten the Srinagar-Leh route, improve trade in apples, saffron, and handicrafts, and open up jobs in hospitality, tourism, and logistics. From a child reaching school in winter to a tourist skiing on fresh powder, Z-Morh promises opportunity with every vehicle that passes through.
And with more infrastructure like this, even the highest, snowiest corners of India can stay connected to its heart.
