Women empowerment initiative
Women Empowerment Boost in Bihar through Rozgar Yojana: On September 26, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to disburse ₹7,500 crore under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana in Bihar. Each of the 75 lakh women beneficiaries will receive ₹10,000 through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This initiative highlights the government’s emphasis on economic empowerment and carries a political undertone ahead of the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025.
Static GK fact: DBT was introduced in India in 2013 to streamline welfare schemes and reduce leakages.
Scheme objectives
The Rozgar Yojana has been designed to create self-employment opportunities for women. Beneficiaries can utilize the seed money to start small-scale ventures such as tailoring, shops, or farm activities. A performance-linked ₹2 lakh grant will follow after six months, encouraging sustainable entrepreneurship.
Static GK Tip: Bihar ranks among the top states in India for women-led Self-Help Groups under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM).
Implementation framework
The Rural Development Department will oversee the program in villages, while the Urban Development Department will handle city beneficiaries. Applications have crossed 1.11 crore, reflecting high demand. The scheme is being rolled out through the Jeevika Self-Help Group (SHG) network, which is already a trusted model in Bihar.
Eligibility rules
To qualify, women must be between 18 and 60 years, belong to a nuclear family, and should not be income tax payers. Special provisions cover unmarried women without parents and SHG members. This ensures support reaches the economically weaker sections with limited access to formal credit systems.
Static GK fact: Bihar has over 1.3 crore women associated with SHGs under the Jeevika program.
Awareness and rollout
District Magistrates have been instructed to conduct awareness and distribution events at district, block, and village levels. Cluster-level federations and village organizations are actively involved. This strategy integrates the scheme with the existing SHG ecosystem to ensure inclusivity and smooth delivery.
Political and social significance
The scheme is not only a social initiative but also a pre-election strategy. By empowering women with financial independence, the government aims to strengthen its rural support base. Women’s votes have played a decisive role in previous Bihar elections, making this initiative strategically crucial.
Static GK Tip: Women’s voter turnout in Bihar Assembly Elections 2020 was higher than men, at nearly 60%.
