Water Bell Scheme in Tamil Nadu Schools: The Water Bell Scheme was officially launched by the Tamil Nadu Education Minister to promote better hydration habits among students. It is designed to encourage children to drink water at regular intervals during school hours to stay healthy and attentive.
Official rollout in all government and aided schools
The scheme was implemented on June 28, 2025, across all government and aided schools in the state. School authorities have been instructed to ensure uniform compliance to support student wellness.

Timed water breaks with a special bell
Under the scheme, a special water bell will ring three times a day—at 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM. The bell sound will be distinct from normal school bells, helping students quickly identify it as a hydration reminder.
Drinking only inside classrooms
During each water bell, students will be given 2–3 minutes to drink water inside their classrooms. Going outside is not allowed during this time, ensuring that classroom discipline and safety are maintained.

Student responsibilities
Students must carry their own water bottles to school daily. Teachers are expected to encourage participation and make sure all students follow the routine without being forced.
Inspired by Kerala’s initiative
Kerala was the first Indian state to introduce the Water Bell Scheme last year. Tamil Nadu’s version adapts the same principles while customizing implementation based on local school structures and timings.
