New boost for dropout youth
Vetri Nichayam scheme: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the Vetri Nichayam scheme in July 2025. It was introduced during the third anniversary of the Naan Mudhalvan initiative in Chennai. This scheme targets school and college dropouts aged 18 to 35.
It offers free skill training to help them rejoin the workforce and secure sustainable jobs. This move aims to promote inclusive growth and address unemployment challenges among marginalized youth.
Wide training coverage
Under Vetri Nichayam, training is provided in 165 courses spread across 38 sectors. These include areas like construction, IT, fashion, healthcare, hospitality, and more.
Training is conducted via 500+ centers throughout Tamil Nadu. These centers are set up in both urban and rural areas to ensure maximum reach.
Static GK fact: The Directorate of Employment and Training, Tamil Nadu, supervises skill-based initiatives in the state.
Supportive benefits and financial aid
The government will bear the entire training cost. In addition, eligible candidates will receive a monthly incentive of ₹12,000.
Youth from remote areas will be provided with free hostel accommodation and meals. This ensures no one is left behind due to logistical or financial constraints.
Static GK Tip: Tamil Nadu ranks among the top states in India for social welfare expenditure and skill training outreach.
Inclusive empowerment for all
This scheme gives special attention to marginalized groups — including tribal youth, disabled individuals, minorities, and Sri Lankan Tamil refugees. Their inclusion ensures equitable access to employment opportunities.
Tamil Nadu is also focusing on foreign job markets. As part of the scheme, students will get foreign language training (like German) to prepare them for international placements.
Tech-enabled future
To streamline the process, the state launched a new app called “Skill Wallet.” This digital tool helps candidates explore courses, enroll easily, and track job opportunities.
The Skill Wallet aims to bridge the gap between training and employment, making the entire journey smooth and transparent.
Static GK fact: Tamil Nadu’s ICT Policy 2021 promotes digital access and innovation for skill development.
