India’s highest literary recognition
Vairamuthu Receives Prestigious Jnanpith Recognition: The 60th Jnanpith Award for 2025 has been conferred on renowned Tamil poet, lyricist and writer R. Vairamuthu. The announcement was made in March 2026 by Bharatiya Jnanpith, the organization responsible for selecting recipients of India’s most prestigious literary honour.
The award recognises Vairamuthu’s immense contribution to Tamil literature, which spans poetry, novels, essays and lyrics. His works are widely appreciated for their emotional intensity, cultural depth and social relevance, making him one of the most influential modern Tamil writers.

Selection process and jury
The selection was made by the Bharatiya Jnanpith Selection Committee chaired by eminent writer Pratibha Ray. The panel consisted of prominent literary personalities including Madhav Kaushik, Damodar Mauzo, Suranjan Das, A. Krishna Rao, Prafulla Shiledar, Kesubhai Desai, Janaki Prasad Sharma, K. Srinivas Rao and Maheshwar.
The committee recognised Vairamuthu’s consistent literary excellence and his ability to merge poetic imagination with social commentary. His writings reflect themes such as human emotions, rural life, environmental awareness and social transformation.
A long literary career
- Vairamuthu was born on 13 July 1953 in Tamil Nadu. Over a literary journey exceeding four decades, he has produced more than 37 books, including poetry collections, novels and essays.
Some of his notable literary works include Kallikattu Ithikasam, Karuvachi Kaaviyam, Thanneer Desam and Moondraam Ulagapor. These works are celebrated for their powerful storytelling and deep portrayal of Tamil culture and rural society.

Contribution to cinema and literature

He has won the National Film Award for Best Lyrics seven times, making him one of the most awarded lyricists in Indian cinema. His literary novel Kallikattu Ithikasam also received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2003, further strengthening his reputation as a leading literary figure.
Other major honours
The Government of India honoured Vairamuthu with the Padma Shri in 2003 and later with the Padma Bhushan in 2014 for his contribution to literature and the arts.
He has also received the Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu, recognising his cultural and literary contributions within the state.
