V. Vedhachalam Receives Tamil Wikki Suran Award for Heritage Work: Renowned Tamil epigraphist and archaeologist V. Vedhachalam has been awarded the Tamil Wikki Suran Award in recognition of his decades-long contribution to the study and preservation of Tamil history. The award was presented in Madurai on July 8, 2025, celebrating his 51 years of service in the field of archaeology and inscriptional studies.
A Scholar of Inscriptions and Ancient Tamilakam
Vedhachalam began his academic journey with a strong foundation in Tamil literature and later specialized in epigraphy and archaeology. His early fieldwork in Karur, once the capital of the Chera dynasty, marked the beginning of a career dedicated to uncovering the material and inscriptional history of Tamil Nadu.
He is widely respected for his ability to decipher ancient Tamil inscriptions, many of which have shed light on the social, political, and cultural life of early Tamil societies.

Even after retirement, he remains actively involved in field visits and continues to contribute to ongoing research.
