UN Population Award Recognition
UNFPA India Felicitates IUSSP for Global Population Research Excellence: UNFPA India honoured the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) for receiving the 2025 UN Population Award in the Institutional Category. The recognition highlights the organisation’s decades-long leadership in population science and its role in shaping global demographic understanding.
Static GK fact: The UN Population Award was established in 1981 to honour outstanding contributions in population and reproductive health.
Contribution of IUSSP to Global Demography
IUSSP, currently led by Dr. Shireen Jejeebhoy (2022–2025), has been influential in building international networks of demographers. The organisation promotes research on changing demographic trends such as ageing, fertility transitions, and climate-related human mobility.
Its work strengthens capacity building, supports training for young demographers, and encourages cross-country collaboration. These contributions improve global understanding of population dynamics and help shape sustainable development policies.
Highlights from IASP 46th Annual Conference
The felicitation ceremony was held during the 46th Annual Conference of the Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP), themed “People, Planet, Prosperity”. The discussions centred around India’s evolving demographic landscape and the role of its youth population in driving inclusive growth.
The event was jointly organised by IASP, the National Atlas & Thematic Mapping Organisation (NATMO), and the Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI).
Static GK Tip: NATMO functions under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and is India’s premier map-making and thematic research organisation.
Key Guests and Expert Insights
The conference featured distinguished guests, including Prof. K. N. Singh, Shri Vijay Bharti (IAS), and Prof. A. P. Singh.
UNFPA India Representative Andrea M. Wojnar delivered a keynote address connecting population trends with climate change, equity, and sustainable development. She emphasised that India’s youthful demographic structure provides a strategic opportunity to build a resilient workforce.
Focus on Evidence-Based Policy
Participants highlighted the need for robust demographic data to guide policies on reproductive health, education, and employment. Strengthening data systems is crucial for ensuring that development policies are rights-based and inclusive.
India’s demographic challenges—ranging from regional fertility variations to youth skills gaps—require long-term planning rooted in scientific evidence.
Static GK fact: India conducts a nationwide Census every 10 years, making it one of the largest administrative statistical exercises globally.
Role of UNFPA in India
UNFPA works to advance sexual and reproductive health, family planning, and youth empowerment. The agency supports programmes ensuring safe childbirth, gender equality, and access to reproductive health services.
Its collaboration with national partners helps India address population issues through a rights-based, people-focused framework.
