Launch of State Innovation Mission
Tripura Launches State Innovation Mission Under AIM 2.0: The State Innovation Mission (SIM) has been launched in Tripura under the framework of Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) 2.0. This initiative aims to embed innovation and entrepreneurship into the state’s long-term development strategy. It operates within the State Support Mission (SSM) of NITI Aayog, which assists states in building strong innovation ecosystems.
The launch event took place at the Hapania International Exhibition Centre in Agartala. The programme was attended by Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, and NITI Aayog Member Dr. V.K. Saraswat.
Static GK fact: NITI Aayog was established on 1 January 2015, replacing the Planning Commission to promote cooperative and competitive federalism.
Institutional Structure and T-NEST
The mission will function through the Tripura Institution for Transformation (TIFT), which will act as the institutional backbone for innovation activities in the state. This framework will coordinate policies, programs, and partnerships aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and technological development.
A dedicated incubation centre named T-NEST (Tripura – Nurturing Entrepreneurship and Startups) has also been inaugurated. The facility will support emerging startups and encourage solutions branded under the concept of “Make from Tripura.”
Innovation Centres will be established across all eight districts of Tripura. These centres will be connected with T-NEST and will specifically promote entrepreneurship among women and tribal communities, ensuring inclusive participation in the innovation ecosystem.
Static GK Tip: Tripura’s capital is Agartala, located near the India–Bangladesh border, making it strategically important for trade and connectivity in Northeast India.
District Innovator Fellowship Initiative
Tripura has also launched the District Innovator Fellowship (DIF), one of the first initiatives of its kind in India. The programme aims to identify grassroots innovators and provide them with structured mentorship and lifecycle support.
Under this fellowship, innovators will receive assistance in idea development, prototyping, funding access, and scaling solutions. The objective is to ensure that local innovations addressing regional challenges receive institutional support and visibility.
This initiative is expected to encourage bottom-up innovation, where community-level solutions contribute to broader economic and social development.
AI Vision and Future Innovation Hub
The Tripura government has also announced plans to formulate a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence Policy aligned with the national vision of responsible and inclusive AI development. The policy will focus on applying AI in governance, public service delivery, and industry.
As part of this vision, an AI City is proposed in Agartala, which will be developed with the support of global technology partners. The proposed hub aims to transform Tripura into a future-ready centre for digital innovation and AI-driven governance.
Static GK fact: Artificial Intelligence is widely considered a key driver of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, influencing sectors such as healthcare, governance, finance, and education.
Role in National Innovation Ecosystem
Through the State Innovation Mission, AIM 2.0 will collaborate with the Tripura government to develop a long-term innovation strategy. The mission will focus on capacity building, policy support, partnerships, peer learning, and programmatic interventions across the entire innovation lifecycle.
The initiative also emphasizes innovation education from the school level, improved mentorship networks, and better access to funding and infrastructure for startups.
The programme aligns with the national development vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which positions innovation and entrepreneurship as central pillars for India’s economic transformation and inclusive growth.
