Maharashtra Maintains Its GST Dominance
Top 10 Indian States with Highest GST Collection in FY 2024–25: Maharashtra has once again topped the list in Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue, collecting a whopping ₹3.18 lakh crore in FY 2024–25. With its vast industrial base, strong consumer economy, and cities like Mumbai and Pune, the state remains the leader in India’s tax landscape. Even in April 2025 alone, Maharashtra clocked ₹41,645 crore, continuing its dominance despite a slight dip in growth rate from the previous year.
Karnataka and Gujarat Hold Strong Positions
Karnataka, with major tech hubs like Bengaluru, stood second by collecting over ₹1.43 lakh crore in FY 2024. Its monthly revenue for April 2025 reached ₹17,815 crore, reflecting consistent commercial growth. Meanwhile, Gujarat surprised many by surpassing earlier projections. Its GST collection hit ₹1.74 lakh crore annually, with ₹14,970 crore in April 2025 — thanks to thriving industrial clusters in Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara.
Tamil Nadu and UP See Steady Growth
Tamil Nadu, home to industries in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Tirupur, secured the fourth spot with ₹1.12 lakh crore in annual GST. Its April 2025 collection alone stood at ₹13,831 crore. Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, recorded ₹1.05 lakh crore, showing that rising consumption and infrastructure development are driving revenue in northern India as well.
Small States Show Big Surprises
It’s not just the big states performing well. In April 2025, Lakshadweep recorded a remarkable 287% surge in GST collections, marking one of the highest growth rates among Indian territories. Similarly, northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh (66%), Meghalaya (50%), and Nagaland (42%) registered impressive growth rates. These numbers reflect successful outreach and better tax compliance even in remote regions.
What Makes GST Crucial?
GST, launched on July 1, 2017, unified multiple indirect taxes into one system. It provides a uniform tax structure and allows the Centre and States to share revenue efficiently. In FY 2024–25, India reached a record GST collection of over ₹21.36 lakh crore, with April 2025 alone bringing in ₹2.36 lakh crore — a 12.6% rise compared to last year.
