New Mangrove Initiative
Tidal Mangrove Nursery in Tamil Nadu: A tidal mangrove nursery has been established at Killai near Pichavaram in Cuddalore district. This marks the first such nursery in Tamil Nadu, reflecting a strong push towards coastal restoration and ecological balance.
The nursery currently holds around three lakh saplings, a significant step in restoring degraded coastal ecosystems. Such large-scale efforts contribute to building resilience against climate challenges.
Species Raised
Four key mangrove species are being cultivated here. These include Avicennia marina, Avicennia officinalis, Rhizophora mucronata, and Rhizophora apiculata.
These species are known for their salt tolerance and ability to stabilize coastal soil. Their plantation will strengthen coastal biodiversity while protecting fishing communities from erosion and tidal surges.
Static GK fact: Avicennia marina is one of the most widespread mangrove species in the world, found across Asia, Africa, and Australia.
Link to Missions
The initiative supports both the Green Tamil Nadu Mission and the Tamil Nadu Coastal Restoration Mission (TN-SHORE). These programs aim to restore degraded ecosystems and protect the state’s shoreline from climate-induced threats.
By aligning with these missions, the nursery will serve as a long-term resource hub for sustainable mangrove regeneration.
Static GK Tip: The Green Tamil Nadu Mission was launched in 2022 to increase tree and green cover across the state.
Importance of Pichavaram
The Pichavaram mangrove forest is one of the largest mangrove ecosystems in India, spread over 1,100 hectares. It is home to 13 true mangrove species, providing a unique habitat for fish, birds, and other wildlife.
This new nursery will ensure continuous availability of saplings for expanding Pichavaram’s mangrove cover, ensuring ecological sustainability.
Static GK fact: Pichavaram mangroves are ranked as the second largest in the world after the Sundarbans of West Bengal.
Wider Ecological Benefits
Mangroves play a critical role in absorbing carbon dioxide, reducing coastal erosion, and providing natural barriers against cyclones. They also sustain local fishing livelihoods by serving as nurseries for marine species.
The establishment of this nursery is not only an ecological milestone but also a socio-economic support system for coastal communities.
