Strengthening Digital Access for Small Enterprises
TEAM Initiative Boosting MSME Participation in Digital Commerce: The Trade Enablement and Marketing (TEAM) Initiative has emerged as a major push to expand digital commerce opportunities for India’s micro and small enterprises. Launched as a sub-scheme under the RAMP programme, it carries a financial outlay of ₹277.35 crore for 2024–2027, aimed at supporting wider e-commerce participation. The initiative focuses on bridging technological gaps and enabling MSMEs to access structured online markets backed by government-led digital systems.
Static GK fact: India’s MSME sector contributes around 30% to the nation’s GDP and nearly 48% of total exports.
Integration with ONDC
One of the strongest components of the TEAM Initiative is its deep integration with the Open Network for Digital Commerce. Through this framework, MSMEs receive ready-to-use digital storefronts along with access to digital payments, logistics partners and interoperable services. This reduces the need for independent platform development and lowers onboarding costs, enabling small units to connect directly with buyers across India.
The initiative also ensures consistent digital support using ONDC’s open-network architecture, which is designed to democratise e-commerce access for businesses of all sizes.
Seamless Digital Onboarding
The TEAM portal provides an end-to-end digital entry point for enterprises. It records detailed business profiles, matches sellers with Seller Network Participants (SNPs) and simplifies the onboarding process. This includes catalogue preparation, order handling and continuous handholding to strengthen online visibility. These features collectively help small enterprises adopt digital commerce without facing complex procedural or technological burdens.
Static GK Tip: The concept of open networks in India draws inspiration from the success of UPI, another interoperable digital system.
Capacity-Building and Inclusion
Alongside digital access, the TEAM Initiative prioritises capacity-building. It introduces workshops, training sessions and advisory modules to enhance e-commerce literacy among entrepreneurs. The scheme aims to support five lakh micro and small enterprises, with a strong focus on 50% women-owned units. This aligns with national goals of inclusive development, gender empowerment and expanded participation of women-led enterprises in the digital economy.
Such training-based interventions also help rural and semi-urban entrepreneurs understand market trends, packaging norms, logistics channels and online consumer behaviour.
Advancing MSMEs in a Growing Digital Economy
The TEAM Initiative reflects India’s broader shift toward a digitally resilient economy. With rising online consumption and increasing use of digital payments, the scheme positions small enterprises to benefit from fast-growing e-commerce networks. It reinforces the government’s long-term strategy of modernising the MSME sector, improving competitiveness and widening their integration into domestic and global value chains.
Static GK fact: The MSME Ministry was established in 2007 after the merger of the Ministry of Small Scale Industries and the Ministry of Agro and Rural Industries.
