Major announcements at the summit

Tamil Nadu Strengthens Global Tourism Vision: The Tamil Nadu Global Tourism Summit 2026 held in Chennai marked a major step toward positioning the State as a global tourism hub. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that the prestigious Tamil Biennale 2027 will be organized in January 2027, promoting Tamil culture, heritage, and arts internationally.

The Biennale aims to attract global artists, tourists, and cultural organizations. It will enhance Tamil Nadu’s reputation as a center for cultural diplomacy and creative tourism.

Investment and employment opportunities

During the summit, the State government signed 127 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹22,794 crore. These agreements are expected to generate approximately 65,937 jobs, strengthening both direct and indirect employment in tourism and allied sectors.

Tourism contributes significantly to economic growth through hospitality, transport, and handicrafts. Increased investments will improve infrastructure and attract more domestic and international tourists.

Mamallapuram tourism infrastructure boost

The government announced the creation of a ₹100 crore Special Area Development Authority for Mamallapuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This initiative aims to develop world-class tourism infrastructure, including improved roads, accommodation, and visitor facilities.

Mamallapuram is famous for its rock-cut temples, monuments, and shore temples built during the Pallava dynasty.

Development of tourism destinations across Tamil Nadu

The government has identified 31 locations across Tamil Nadu for tourism development. These locations will include theme parks, camping sites, eco-tourism resorts, and accommodation facilities.

This initiative focuses on sustainable tourism and aims to boost rural tourism and local economies. It will also help distribute tourism benefits beyond major cities.

Role of Tourism Policy 2023 and SIPCOT

Under the Tamil Nadu Tourism Policy 2023, the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) will identify and develop tourist locations. Priority districts include Kanniyakumari, Kallakurichi, Erode, and Thoothukudi.

SIPCOT traditionally focuses on industrial development but is now expanding into tourism infrastructure to attract private investments.

Tourism growth and performance indicators

In the last five years, Tamil Nadu invested ₹612.18 crore in tourism development. This resulted in attracting 128.97 crore domestic tourists and 45 lakh foreign tourists, making Tamil Nadu one of the most visited states in India.

Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural heritage, temples, beaches, and hill stations contribute significantly to its tourism success.
