Tamil Nadu Soil Health Strategic Roadmap for Sustainable Agriculture

Policy Push for Soil Revitalisation

Tamil Nadu Soil Health Strategic Roadmap for Sustainable Agriculture: The Government of Tamil Nadu has launched a structured roadmap to strengthen soil quality and ensure long-term agricultural productivity. The initiative aligns with the State’s focus on sustainable agriculture and climate adaptation strategies.

A dedicated allocation of nearly ₹206 crore has been provided under the Soil Health and Fertility Scheme. The objective is to restore soil nutrients, reduce excessive chemical fertilizer usage, and promote balanced farming practices.

Static GK fact: Tamil Nadu ranks among India’s leading agricultural states in crops like rice, sugarcane, and millets, making soil sustainability critical for its economy.

Green Manure Expansion Plan

A central feature of the roadmap is the promotion of Green Manure Cultivation across farmlands. Green manure crops such as sunhemp and dhaincha are grown and ploughed back into the soil to enhance nitrogen content and organic matter.

The State plans to cover nearly 2 lakh acres through green manure seed distribution. More than 2 lakh farmers are expected to benefit directly from this programme.

This method improves soil structure, increases microbial activity, and enhances moisture retention capacity, making agriculture more climate-resilient.

Static GK Tip: Green manure crops help fix atmospheric nitrogen through biological processes, reducing dependence on synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.

Strengthening Soil Health Cards Network

Tamil Nadu has already distributed over 15.25 million Soil Health Cards (SHCs) to farmers. These cards provide scientific data on soil nutrient status and recommend appropriate fertilizer usage.

The Soil Health Cards system enables farmers to apply balanced nutrients, preventing overuse of urea and phosphate-based fertilizers. This improves yield quality while lowering input costs.

The SHC system aligns with India’s broader soil monitoring framework, ensuring data-driven agricultural decision-making.

Static GK fact: The national Soil Health Card Scheme was launched in 2015 to promote soil test-based nutrient management across India.

Financial Support and Start-up Innovation

To encourage innovation in soil conservation, a ₹20 crore start-up fund has been allocated. The fund supports agri-tech solutions focused on soil mapping, organic inputs, and precision farming tools.

This initiative integrates modern technology with traditional agricultural wisdom. It encourages entrepreneurship in rural areas while addressing ecological challenges.

The roadmap also supports climate resilience by improving soil carbon content and water retention, both essential for coping with erratic rainfall patterns.

Towards Long-Term Food Security

Healthy soil forms the backbone of food security and agricultural stability. By investing in fertility restoration and nutrient balance, Tamil Nadu aims to secure long-term productivity.

Improved soil health enhances crop yield consistency, reduces environmental degradation, and supports farmer income stability. The roadmap represents a shift from input-intensive farming to sustainable nutrient management.

The integrated approach combining green manure, soil testing, financial backing, and farmer outreach positions Tamil Nadu as a proactive state in agricultural sustainability planning.
