Launch of Marine Resources Foundation
Tamil Nadu Marine Resources Foundation and Restoration Efforts: The Tamil Nadu government launched the Tamil Nadu Marine Resources Foundation (TNMRF) to conserve and restore fragile marine ecosystems. The initiative focuses on protecting endangered species and ensuring the long-term survival of coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass habitats.
This foundation will also promote eco-tourism and strengthen environmental awareness among coastal communities. It is expected to create a balance between ecological preservation and economic activities.
Static GK fact: India has a coastline of about 7,516 km, supporting millions of livelihoods through fishing, trade, and tourism.
Focus on Ecosystem Restoration
TNMRF will play a crucial role in rehabilitating degraded marine ecosystems. By mapping biodiversity and advancing research in marine geographic information systems (GIS), the foundation will create scientific data for sustainable planning.
The initiative will also encourage eco-friendly aquaculture, seaweed farming, and production of coastal crafts, providing alternative incomes for fisherfolk.
Static GK Tip: Seagrass beds are vital as they act as carbon sinks, storing up to 35 times more carbon than tropical forests.
Establishment of MERRC
Alongside TNMRF, the government created the Manali Ennore Restoration and Rejuvenation Council (MERRC) to restore the Manali-Ennore region, which faced severe damage during the December 2023 oil spill.
The council will prioritize pollution control, waterbody restoration, and green projects to revive this ecologically sensitive area.
Emergency Response Mechanism
A modern emergency response centre has been set up at Tondiarpet to address floods, cyclones, and industrial accidents. This facility will strengthen Tamil Nadu’s disaster management framework and ensure rapid action during crises.
It is expected to work in coordination with local authorities, disaster relief agencies, and environmental bodies to minimize ecological and human loss.
Static GK fact: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was constituted in 2006 under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, to handle such emergencies.
Significance for Tamil Nadu
These initiatives reflect Tamil Nadu’s leadership in climate resilience and sustainable development. Protecting marine wealth not only supports biodiversity but also secures livelihoods in coastal districts.
By combining restoration projects with skill-based training, the government is ensuring that both environmental health and economic security move forward together.
