Rising organ donation numbers
Tamil Nadu Leads Organ Donation Movement: Tamil Nadu continues to strengthen its reputation as a leader in organ donation and transplantation in India. In January 2026, the state recorded its highest-ever monthly deceased organ donations with 33 donors.
This milestone highlights the increasing public awareness and effective coordination between hospitals and the government healthcare system. The state has consistently maintained strong institutional support for organ donation through well-organized medical infrastructure.
Static GK fact: Tamil Nadu pioneered the structured deceased organ donation programme in India in 2008, becoming a national model for transplant coordination.
Key hospitals contributing to donations
Several government hospitals played an important role in facilitating organ donation during this period. Government Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital recorded the highest number of donors with five cases.
The hospital operates as a Non-Transplant Organ Retrieval Centre (NTORC). These centres focus on identifying brain-dead donors, retrieving organs, and transferring them to transplant centres where patients are waiting for life-saving procedures.
Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai recorded four donors, reflecting the strong organ donation network in southern Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in Chennai and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital each reported two organ donors, demonstrating the participation of major urban healthcare centres.
Wider participation across Tamil Nadu
Organ donations were also reported from several other districts. Hospitals in Coimbatore, Salem, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai each recorded one donor during this period.
This wide geographical distribution shows the expansion of organ donation awareness beyond metropolitan areas. District-level hospitals are increasingly becoming active participants in the transplantation network.
Static GK Tip: Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, established in 1664, is one of the oldest hospitals in India and serves as a major tertiary healthcare centre in Tamil Nadu.
Strong annual performance
Tamil Nadu recorded 266 brain-dead organ donors in 2025, reflecting sustained progress in the state’s transplantation programme.
In the first 43 days of 2026 alone, 42 organ donations were already recorded, indicating a continued upward trend. The increasing numbers highlight both public awareness and improved hospital coordination in identifying potential donors.
Organ donation from brain-dead patients allows the retrieval of multiple organs such as heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, and corneas, thereby saving several lives from a single donor.
Institutional framework supporting transplantation
The deceased donor organ transplantation programme in Tamil Nadu is coordinated by the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN). This authority oversees donor identification, organ allocation, and transplant coordination across the state.
A major policy step was the issuance of Government Order (GO) 331 in 2023, which provides State honours to brain-dead organ donors. This recognition acknowledges the humanitarian contribution of donors and their families.
Such initiatives aim to encourage voluntary organ donation and reinforce public trust in the transplantation system.
Static GK fact: India observes Organ Donation Day on 27 November to promote awareness about organ donation and transplantation.
