Focus on Welfare: Women, Students, and Workers Benefit

Tamil Nadu Budget 2025: Major Announcements for Welfare, Education, and Infrastructure: The Tamil Nadu Budget 2025 puts a strong focus on women’s welfare, student support, and worker security. One of the standout moves is the Rs. 3,600 crore allocation for the ‘Vidiyal’ bus travel scheme, which offers free travel for women. Also, Rs. 13,807 crore has been allotted for the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam, and the scheme will now include more women beneficiaries.

To support gig workers, the government will provide a ₹20,000 grant for 2,000 workers to purchase two-wheelers. Additionally, a group insurance scheme for 1.5 lakh workers has been introduced.

Education Gets a Digital and Structural Boost

In a tech-forward step, 20 lakh college students will receive a tablet or laptop of their choice over the next two years. Rs. 1,000 crore has also been allocated for government school infrastructure, and 2,676 smart classrooms will be developed. Furthermore, children who lost both parents will be given a monthly ₹2,000 stipend to continue their education.

Infrastructure and Urban Development

Under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Housing Scheme, 1 lakh houses will be constructed at a cost of ₹3,500 crore. Another ₹2,000 crore has been allotted for the Kalaignar Urban Development Scheme. A new city over 2,000 acres near Chennai will be developed, and Ramanathapuram will get a new airport, especially to support tourism in Rameswaram.

The stamp duty on properties worth up to ₹10 lakh will be reduced by 1% if the registration is in a woman’s name, promoting women’s ownership and financial independence.

Cultural, Archaeological, and Language Initiatives

Tamil Nadu is taking major steps in heritage preservation. Rs. 7 crore has been allotted for archaeological excavations, including at Keeladi (Sivagangai), Telunganur (Salem), Adhichanur (Kallakurichi), and Nagapattinam. Two new museums will be built—‘Noyyal Museum’ in Erode (based on Kodumanal excavation) and ‘Naavaai Museum’ in Ramanathapuram.

The ‘Agaram – Museum of Languages’ will be set up at Madurai World Tamil Sangam, and a ‘World Tamil Olympiad’ will be launched as an online global exam with Rs. 1 crore prize money for top scorers.

To promote Tamil globally, Rs. 133 crore has been allotted to translate Thirukkural into all 193 UN-recognized languages within three years.

Healthcare and Social Security

The government will spend Rs. 120 crore to upgrade the Anna Cancer Hospital in Kancheepuram. Also, ‘Anbucholai’ old age homes will be established in 10 cities, including Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, and Thanjavur, at a cost of ₹10 crore.

Additionally, a Raptors Research Foundation will be established with ₹1 crore from the Endangered Species Conservation Fund, aiming to protect rare bird species.
