Tamil Nadu Baby Care Kit Scheme: The Government of Tamil Nadu has introduced the Baby Care Kit Scheme to reduce the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) among newborns, particularly those with Low Birth Weight (LBW). Low birth weight refers to babies born weighing less than 2.5 kilograms, a condition linked to higher risks of infections, malnutrition, and developmental delays.

The scheme was announced in the Tamil Nadu State Budget as part of the state’s ongoing commitment to improve maternal and child healthcare services. The programme focuses mainly on infants born in government hospitals, where a large number of institutional deliveries take place.

Components of the baby care kit

Under the scheme, eligible families receive monthly baby care kits designed to support the early health and nutritional needs of newborns. The kit contains iron drops, multivitamin drops, and Vitamin D3 drops, which are essential for strengthening immunity and promoting healthy growth.

Along with nutritional supplements, the kit also includes an infant medical card and a booklet explaining 12 child development signs. These materials help parents and healthcare workers track a baby’s growth, development milestones, and health conditions during the early months of life.

This approach not only supports nutrition but also promotes parental awareness about infant health, early detection of health issues, and timely medical intervention.

Target population and scale

Tamil Nadu records approximately 4.5 lakh deliveries every year in government hospitals. Among these births, nearly 52,000 babies are identified as low birth weight infants.

These babies form the primary target group for the Baby Care Kit Scheme, as they require additional medical attention and nutritional support during their early stages of life.

The scheme is implemented with a financial allocation of about ₹8.07 crore, highlighting the state government’s focus on improving neonatal health outcomes through targeted interventions.

Monitoring through digital health platforms

Alongside the Baby Care Kit initiative, the state government has also strengthened digital monitoring of maternal and infant health. The Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) system plays an important role in tracking pregnancies and newborn health.

A mobile application called “Thaimai” has been launched under PICME to monitor antenatal care, immunisation schedules, and high-risk pregnancy alerts. This digital platform helps healthcare workers identify vulnerable mothers and infants early and provide timely medical support.

By integrating digital monitoring with physical health support schemes, Tamil Nadu aims to ensure comprehensive maternal and child healthcare management.

Improvement in infant mortality indicators

The introduction of targeted health programmes has contributed to an improvement in Tamil Nadu’s infant health indicators. The state’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) declined from 8.2 per 1,000 live births in 2023–24 to 7.7 in 2024–25.

This improvement reflects the effectiveness of public health interventions, institutional deliveries, and child nutrition programmes implemented by the state government.
