Tamil Nadu Announces New Tourism Projects Worth ₹200 Crore for 2025: Tamil Nadu is set to undergo a significant tourism revamp in 2025, with the state government unveiling eco-tourism and infrastructure projects valued at over ₹200 crore. This announcement came during the state Assembly’s demand for grants session. The plan focuses on both nature-based tourism and religious heritage, signaling a balanced approach to promoting Tamil Nadu as a year-round tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors.
Focus on Religious Tourism Destinations
A significant portion of the investment—₹100 crore—will be used to upgrade major religious tourism sites across the state. The coastal town of Mamallapuram, famous for its UNESCO-listed shore temples and ancient rock-cut architecture, will receive ₹30 crore for modernisation. Kanniyakumari, where the Indian Ocean meets the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, will get ₹20 crore for improved visitor amenities. Likewise, Tiruchendur, a major Lord Murugan shrine on the east coast, is set to receive ₹30 crore, while Velankanni and Nagore in Nagapattinam district, known for their Christian and Islamic religious significance, will share an allocation of ₹20 crore.
Heritage Centres for Jain and Buddhist Legacy
In a unique cultural push, the Tamil Nadu government will also establish Cultural Heritage Centres that celebrate the state’s Buddhist and Jain past. These centres will come up in Kancheepuram, a historic seat of learning, and Madurai, a city that blends modernity with deep cultural roots. These projects are expected to enhance awareness about the state’s diverse spiritual history, attract heritage tourism, and boost educational research.
Nature and Adventure: Spotlight on Kalvarayan Hills
Beyond temples and shrines, the government’s vision includes eco-tourism development. The scenic Kalvarayan Hills in Kallakurichi district, known for tribal culture and medicinal plants, will be developed with improved tourist infrastructure. This includes Gomuki and Manimuktha dams, and Karumandurai Farm Lake in Salem, which are set to be transformed into sustainable tourism spots. These locations offer a break from urban life and present lesser-known destinations for trekking, nature camps, and cultural immersion.
A Strategic Move for Economic Growth
This multi-pronged tourism strategy not only preserves and promotes Tamil Nadu’s cultural and natural wealth but also aims to create jobs and improve the state’s rural economy.
