Initiated by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in partnership with NITI Aayog, this national scheme focuses on female students in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Structured Learning for Maximum Impact
The programme’s two-tier learning structure makes it stand out. The Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme (EAP) is the first step, helping students understand what it means to be an entrepreneur. Next comes the Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP), a more in-depth course that focuses on critical aspects such as strategy, risk management, and funding. This phased approach ensures that students move from curiosity to capability with confidence.
Mentorship That Goes Beyond the Classroom
What truly sets Swavalambini apart is its strong six-month mentorship model. Each participant gets personal guidance from experienced mentors, helping them turn ideas into actionable business plans. Alongside, a Faculty Development Programme (FDP) trains college educators to become active supporters of student-led startups. This ensures that the support system for budding women entrepreneurs continues within the college even after training ends.
Expansion Across India and Role Model Recognition
Originally rolled out in Eastern India, Swavalambini is now present in top institutions like Banaras Hindu University and the University of Hyderabad. With plans to expand nationwide, the programme is making sure that women from all backgrounds can benefit. A unique feature is the Award to Rewards Initiative, which celebrates successful women entrepreneurs emerging from the programme. These recognitions motivate others and build a vibrant, supportive community.
Vision for a Self-Reliant India
Swavalambini’s ultimate goal is bold yet clear: to ensure that at least 10% of trained women go on to establish businesses.
