State Level Achievement Survey 2025 Highlights

Overview

State Level Achievement Survey 2025 Highlights: The State Level Achievement Survey (SLAS) 2025 was conducted across Tamil Nadu to evaluate the learning outcomes of students in Classes 3, 5, and 8. This large-scale exercise covered 980,340 students from 45,924 government and government-aided schools, marking one of the most comprehensive assessments in the state’s education system.

Static GK fact: The SLAS is a state adaptation of the National Achievement Survey (NAS) framework used by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to gauge student competencies nationwide.

Subjects and Methodology

The assessment focused on six key subjects — Tamil, English, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Science, and Social Science. Each paper was designed using Bloom’s Taxonomy, ensuring questions tested both conceptual understanding and higher-order thinking.

The survey aimed to provide actionable insights into student learning patterns, helping teachers and administrators identify strengths and weaknesses in classroom learning.

Class 3 Performance

Students of Class 3 displayed encouraging proficiency, especially in Environmental Studies (76%) and Tamil (67%). English saw an average score of 69%, while Mathematics recorded 54%, indicating a need for focused numeracy interventions.

Static GK Tip: In Tamil Nadu, Class 3 falls under the Foundational Stage as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 structure.

Class 5 Learning Trends

At the Class 5 level, the highest performance was seen in Tamil (76%), followed by Environmental Studies (57%) and Mathematics (57%). However, English proficiency was comparatively low at 51%, suggesting linguistic and comprehension challenges among upper primary students.

Class 8 Decline in Scores

A significant finding from SLAS 2025 was the performance decline in Class 8. The average scores were Tamil 52%, English 39%, Mathematics 38%, Science 37%, and Social Science 54%. The results reflected the growing learning gap as students advance through grades, emphasizing the need for targeted remedial programs.

Static GK fact: Class 8 marks the end of Upper Primary School under the Right to Education (RTE) Act framework in India.

District-Wise Achievements

The district analysis revealed that 22 districts performed above state averages, while 15 districts lagged in all subjects. Kanyakumari district topped the state with an overall average of 66.5%, followed by Tenkasi, Sivagangai, and Madurai, which secured the third rank overall.

These results underscore the regional disparities in education quality, influenced by teacher availability, school infrastructure, and socio-economic factors.

Key Insights

The SLAS 2025 data will serve as a crucial benchmark for improving classroom instruction and aligning teaching methods with national learning standards. The survey reinforces the importance of continuous teacher training, early intervention, and data-driven education policies to enhance student learning outcomes across Tamil Nadu.
