Record Breaking Moment
Smriti Mandhana Creates History with Fastest Indian ODI Century: On 20 September 2025, Smriti Mandhana became the fastest Indian to score a century in One Day Internationals. She reached her hundred in just 50 balls against Australia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, surpassing Virat Kohli’s record of a 52-ball ton in 2013.
This makes her achievement historic as no other Indian, across men’s or women’s cricket, has reached a century so quickly in ODIs.
Static GK fact: The Arun Jaitley Stadium, earlier called Feroz Shah Kotla, is one of India’s oldest cricket grounds, established in 1883.
Smriti Mandhana’s Blazing Knock
Mandhana smashed 17 fours and 5 sixes in her blistering innings of 125 runs off 65 balls. She reached the milestone with a towering six over midwicket, electrifying the Delhi crowd.
Her knock came during India’s chase of a massive 413-run target set by Australia. Alongside captain Harmanpreet Kaur, she stitched a 121-run partnership, keeping India alive in the chase.
Women’s ODI Fastest Hundreds
Mandhana’s 50-ball century is the second-fastest in women’s ODI history. The record still belongs to Meg Lanning, who smashed a 45-ball hundred against New Zealand in 2012.
Other notable fast hundreds include Karen Rolton (57 balls), Beth Mooney (57 balls), and Sophie Devine (59 balls).
Static GK Tip: The first Women’s ODI was played in 1973 between England and Australia, two years before the first men’s ODI World Cup in 1975.
Breaking Virat Kohli’s Decade Old Record
Mandhana overtook Virat Kohli’s 52-ball century against Australia at Jaipur in 2013, a record that stood for over a decade. Before this, Mandhana herself held India’s women’s record with a 70-ball ton against Ireland, making this achievement a 20-ball improvement on her own feat.
This underlines her evolution as one of India’s finest batting icons in world cricket.
Match and Series Context
Australia, led by Beth Mooney’s 138 off 75 balls, piled up 412/7 – their joint-highest ODI total. India, despite Mandhana’s heroics, fell short as wickets tumbled after her dismissal. Deepti Sharma emerged as the most economical bowler with figures of 10-0-68-1.
With this result, Australia sealed the series 2-1, denying India a home victory in the decider.
Static GK fact: The highest successful ODI chase remains South Africa’s 438/9 against Australia in Johannesburg, 2006.
Road Ahead for Indian Women’s Cricket
The record-breaking innings comes just days before the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, hosted by India from 30 September 2025. Mandhana’s form adds hope to India’s chances on home soil.
Her achievement is also a symbolic moment, showing the rise of women’s cricket as a parallel force to men’s cricket in terms of skill, records, and audience following.
