Background and Launch
Skilling for AI Readiness SOAR: Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) is a national-level skilling initiative launched in July 2025 under the Skill India Mission.
The programme is anchored by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and reflects India’s push towards future-ready human capital.
The initiative comes at a time when Artificial Intelligence is reshaping jobs, governance, and service delivery.
SOAR aims to ensure that AI literacy begins early, rather than remaining limited to higher education or specialised professionals.
Vision and Core Objective
The central objective of SOAR is to integrate AI competencies into India’s education and skilling ecosystem.
It focuses on building foundational AI understanding, ethical awareness, and applied problem-solving skills.
Rather than producing AI engineers alone, the programme targets AI-ready citizens who can adapt to technology-driven workplaces.
This aligns with India’s demographic advantage and the need to upskill the school-age population.
Static GK fact: India has the world’s largest youth population, with over 65% of citizens below 35 years of age.
Target Groups Covered
SOAR has a clearly defined beneficiary base.
It targets school students from Classes 6 to 12, covering both government and private schools.
In addition, the programme includes educators and teachers, recognising that effective AI learning depends on trained instructors.
Teacher capacity-building ensures long-term sustainability of AI education in schools.
This dual focus on students and educators differentiates SOAR from earlier digital literacy programmes.
Structure and Learning Approach
The programme introduces age-appropriate AI modules, progressing from basic concepts to real-world applications.
Students are exposed to data thinking, algorithms, and responsible AI use, rather than complex coding alone.
Educators receive structured training and certification, enabling them to integrate AI concepts into regular classroom teaching.
The emphasis is on hands-on learning, critical thinking, and ethical use of technology.
Static GK Tip: Early exposure to emerging technologies improves cognitive adaptability and career readiness in students.
Role of the President of India
A key highlight of SOAR is the decision for the President of India to grace the programme and confer AI certificates.
This high-level constitutional presence underscores the national importance of AI skilling.
Such involvement symbolically elevates AI education to a strategic national priority, similar to literacy and digital inclusion.
It also enhances the programme’s visibility and credibility across states and institutions.
Significance for India’s Workforce
SOAR contributes directly to India’s goal of building a future-ready workforce.
AI-skilled students are better prepared for sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, education, agriculture, and governance.
The programme also supports India’s ambition to become a global AI talent hub, while reducing skill mismatches.
By starting at the school level, SOAR addresses the skill pipeline, not just short-term employment needs.
Static GK fact: Artificial Intelligence is recognised globally as a General-Purpose Technology, like electricity and the internet.
