Government and industry unite for skilling
Shell India and Government Launch Green Skills and EV Training: The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has joined forces with Shell India to train India’s youth in electric vehicle (EV) technologies and green energy skills. This fresh partnership was rolled out through the Directorate General of Training (DGT). The goal is simple yet powerful—make young Indians job-ready and climate-ready.
The demand for skilled workers in the renewable energy and electric mobility sectors is growing fast. To meet this need, the programme will offer training in EV systems, battery diagnostics, and safety protocols, ensuring that students and trainers alike are equipped for the future.
Training structure and reach
This is not a one-size-fits-all model. The training has different levels based on the institutes and facilities available. At National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs), a 240-hour advanced EV Technician course is being launched. It focuses on practical skills and deeper technical knowledge.
For Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) with Shell-supported labs, a 90-hour job-oriented course will be offered. And in locations without labs, there’s a 50-hour foundational module that introduces green skills.
The programme is set to run in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, which are some of India’s most industrially active states. It ensures balanced regional growth and taps into zones already making strides in EV adoption.
Collaboration beyond training
Over 250 trainers will be educated under the Training of Trainers (ToT) model, building a long-term, sustainable ecosystem. This move will help standardise training quality and ensure that the curriculum remains relevant to industry expectations.
The courses are being co-designed with Edunet Foundation, bringing in educational innovation to match Shell’s industry expertise. Upon completion, participants will receive certificates jointly issued by Shell and DGT, adding credibility and placement value.
What makes this initiative special?
India is aiming to hit net-zero emissions by 2070, and this training programme is a step in that direction. By preparing the youth for clean energy and e-mobility careers, it aligns with India’s global environmental commitments.
The training also promotes employment readiness, which is essential in a country where millions of young people enter the job market every year. Building skills in EV maintenance, safety, and diagnostics also boosts entrepreneurial potential in the automotive and energy sectors.
Historically, India’s focus on skilling has deep roots. Programmes like Skill India Mission, launched in 2015, laid the foundation. This new EV and green energy initiative builds upon that legacy by linking it to sustainability and climate change goals.
