Trade gets a scientific boost
Scientific Backbone for Seamless Indian Trade: The Trade Facilitation Conference 2025 was inaugurated by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary on July 12, 2025, in New Delhi. This landmark event focused on strengthening India’s trade systems through scientific innovation and modern compliance.
The conference was the first of its kind, highlighting the role of science and infrastructure in faster, safer, and more efficient trade.
Organisers and institutional support
The event was jointly organised by the Central Revenues Control Laboratory (CRCL) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). These bodies are instrumental in setting quality standards and ensuring accurate inspection of goods crossing India’s borders.
Static GK fact: CRCL is the apex scientific laboratory under CBIC, headquartered in New Delhi, providing analytical support in customs and GST matters.
Scientific excellence in trade testing
The theme “Scientific Excellence for Seamless Trade” signifies the government’s focus on using modern laboratories and high-end tools to reduce delays in international trade.
Advanced testing systems help verify goods rapidly, cutting down custom clearance time and logistics costs. MoS Chaudhary emphasized the need to balance speed with quality assurance, which is vital for both export competitiveness and consumer safety.
Static GK fact: The CBIC operates multiple Revenue Laboratories under CRCL to assist with chemical analysis of imported/exported goods.
Boosting India’s export potential
The conference demonstrated how better testing infrastructure can support India’s aspiration to become a global trade hub. With reliable labs and modern equipment, Indian exports can meet global standards more easily, boosting confidence among foreign buyers.
Trade representatives, scientists, and customs officials agreed that quicker lab results lead to lower compliance costs and faster trade flows.
Large-scale participation and next steps
Over 400 delegates from industry, customs, trade, and science sectors participated. The wide engagement reflected the urgent need for an upgraded testing ecosystem to support India’s growing trade ambitions.
The event laid out a future roadmap for policy changes, lab modernisation, and deeper industry-government collaboration.
Static GK Tip: India’s merchandise exports crossed USD 770 billion in FY 2023–24, showing consistent year-on-year growth despite global uncertainties.
