Launch of the Pilot Project
Satnavri Becomes India’s First Smart Intelligent Village: The rural village of Satnavri in Nagpur district has been chosen as India’s first Smart Intelligent Village. The project was approved by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis after a detailed proposal by the Voice of Indian Communication Technology Enterprises (VOICE). With a population of about 1,800, good road connectivity, and readiness for digital infrastructure upgrades, Satnavri was selected as an ideal pilot site.
Static GK fact: Nagpur is often called the Zero Mile City as it is the geographical centre of India.
Advancing Agriculture with Technology
Agriculture forms the foundation of the project. Drone-assisted farming, smart irrigation systems, and soil sensors help farmers monitor crops and optimise resource use. Real-time data on soil health, weather, and harvest timings are shared through mobile interfaces. Crop dashboards provide market forecasts, allowing farmers to make informed decisions.
Static GK fact: India is the world’s second-largest producer of rice and wheat, after China.
Digital Transformation in Education and Healthcare
Schools in Satnavri are equipped with AI-based digital learning platforms and smart Anganwadi centres. Students benefit from interactive lessons tailored to individual learning needs. Healthcare is digitised with e-health cards and telemedicine portals that connect villagers to specialists at the Government Medical College. Mobile health units integrate with these systems for faster medical intervention.
Static GK fact: Telemedicine was formally recognised by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in India in 2020.
Governance Powered by Real-Time Data
The gram panchayat now uses WiFi-enabled digital governance tools to monitor civic services such as water quality and irrigation. High-speed optical fibre connectivity ensures efficient communication. Officials conduct regular reviews to ensure smooth functioning and active community participation in decision-making.
Static GK fact: The Gram Panchayat is the lowest tier of the Panchayati Raj system in India.
Stakeholders and Future Expansion
The initiative is supported by 15 private firms under the Make in India initiative, with VOICE as the lead technology partner. Senior state officials, including the Chief Secretary, oversee progress. If successful, this model could be replicated in hundreds of villages across Maharashtra and eventually across the country.
Static GK fact: The Make in India initiative was launched in September 2014 to encourage manufacturing and investment in India.
