Foundation of a Strategic Connectivity Project
Sagar Island Bridge Project in West Bengal: The Sagar Island Bridge Project was launched in West Bengal with the laying of the foundation stone for a 5-kilometre-long bridge over the Muriganga River. The project aims to connect Sagar Island directly with the mainland. It represents a major infrastructure initiative in the fragile and strategically important Sundarbans region.
The bridge is designed as a four-lane structure, ensuring smooth and high-capacity movement of vehicles. Once completed, it will permanently replace the region’s long-standing dependence on ferry services.
Technical and Financial Details
The bridge will connect Lot 8 in Kakdwip with Kachuberia on Sagar Island. The total estimated cost of the project is ₹1,670 crore. The construction contract has been awarded to Larsen & Toubro, a major Indian infrastructure company.
The expected completion timeline is two to three years. After completion, the bridge will offer all-weather connectivity, reducing travel time and eliminating disruptions caused by tides and weather conditions.

Importance for Gangasagar Mela
Sagar Island hosts the famous Gangasagar Mela, held annually during Makar Sankranti. The island is traditionally believed to be the point where the River Ganga meets the Bay of Bengal, near the Kapil Muni Temple. Lakhs of pilgrims visit the island every year to take a holy dip.
The bridge is expected to significantly improve crowd management, emergency access, and logistics during the mela. It will also reduce pressure on temporary transport arrangements used during the pilgrimage season.

Boost to Local Economy and Tourism
Improved road connectivity will directly benefit trade, tourism, and local commerce on Sagar Island. Faster movement of goods and people will support fisheries, agriculture, and small businesses. Tourism beyond the pilgrimage season is also expected to grow.
The project is likely to create employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases. Long-term economic integration with the mainland will enhance living standards for island residents.
Infrastructure Push in the Sundarbans
Since 2011, multiple bridges have been constructed in South 24 Parganas, strengthening regional connectivity. Bridges over the Hatania–Dowania rivers have already improved access to Bakkhali, a coastal tourist destination.
Electricity coverage has been extended to Sagar Island, and a separate Sundarbans Police District was created to improve governance and security. These steps reflect a broader strategy of infrastructure-led development in ecologically sensitive areas.

Centre–State Dimension and Welfare Measures
The State Government undertook the bridge project after repeated proposals to the Union Government did not receive approval. Concerns were also raised regarding the absence of central grants for Gangasagar Mela, despite funding support for other major religious events elsewhere.
During the launch, welfare measures were announced for families affected by accidents during the fair. The earlier Gangasagar pilgrimage tax was also withdrawn to reduce the financial burden on pilgrims.
