Sachet App: India’s New Disaster Alert Tool and Global Relief Mission: The Sachet mobile application, launched by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), is a significant step in strengthening India’s disaster response system. Introduced to the public through Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann ki Baat’, the app provides real-time, geo-tagged alerts for natural disasters like floods, landslides, cyclones, forest fires, and more. Built on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), it customises alerts based on the user’s specific location, allowing people to subscribe to updates for selected states or districts.
Key Features for Public Safety
The Sachet app goes beyond simple alerts by providing daily weather forecasts sourced directly from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). It ensures users get trusted updates from official channels during emergencies. The app also features emergency helpline numbers, safety Dos and Don’ts, and most notably, satellite connectivity. This ensures that the app continues to function even when mobile networks fail—making it a lifeline during disasters.
Accessibility Through Multi-Language Support
To increase accessibility for all Indian citizens, the Sachet app is available in 12 Indian languages. Users can also access text-to-speech features for enhanced usability, making it inclusive for the visually impaired and linguistically diverse populations. Available on both Android and iOS, the app promotes digital inclusivity and strengthens individual disaster preparedness across rural and urban India.
India’s Global Relief Role: Operation Brahma
In his address, PM Modi also highlighted Operation Brahma, India’s rapid humanitarian response to the Myanmar earthquake. This relief mission reflects India’s growing role in global disaster aid. Indian teams were dispatched to Myanmar to set up field hospitals, assess earthquake damage, and distribute critical supplies like blankets, tents, and medicines. The operation reaffirms India’s commitment to international humanitarian cooperation and showcases its expanding emergency response capabilities.
