The disease is caused by phytoplasmas, which are phloem-restricted plant-pathogenic bacteria. These organisms interfere with the movement of nutrients within the plant. They cannot survive outside living host tissues.
Transmission occurs mainly through insect vectors, especially sap-sucking insects that feed on coconut palms. This makes vector control an important aspect of disease management.
