RBI unveils special coin for Bhupen Hazarika: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin on September 13, 2025, to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika. The launch event will be held in Guwahati, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the ceremony. The occasion is meant to honour the artistic and cultural legacy of the legendary figure.
Public celebrations in Guwahati
The release function will take place at the Veterinary College Ground, Khanapara, with large public participation expected. On the same day, the Assam Publication Board will publish a comprehensive biography of Hazarika. Plans are in place to translate the book into various Indian languages so that his life and philosophy reach readers across the country.

Nationwide centenary observance
This coin issue forms part of a year-long centenary programme that began on September 8, 2025. The celebrations will culminate on September 8, 2026, at a closing ceremony in the presence of the President of India. Major cultural events are planned in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya, highlighting Hazarika’s national significance.
Heritage projects and tributes
As a tribute to his vision of unity, the Bhupen Hazarika Memorial site in Jalukbari will be renamed Bhupen Hazarika Samannay Tirtha. A permanent museum at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati will preserve his manuscripts, awards, and personal artefacts. Additionally, all Bihu festival committees in Assam will devote one evening to his songs and ideals.

Enduring contribution of Hazarika
Born in 1926, Bhupen Hazarika was not only a celebrated musician but also a poet, thinker, and reformist voice. His compositions blended Assamese folk traditions with global themes of justice, equality, and humanity. Through music, he addressed social struggles and gave cultural pride to millions.
In 2019, the Government of India honoured him posthumously with the Bharat Ratna, acknowledging his unmatched role in shaping Indian cultural consciousness.
