A Spiritual and Infrastructural Milestone
PM Modi Inaugurates ₹8,300 Crore Development Projects in Tamil Nadu : Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Rameswaram on April 6, 2025, to launch development projects worth over ₹8,300 crore. The visit held deep symbolic meaning, aligning with both Ram Navami and the BJP’s Foundation Day. Prime Minister Modi commenced the day with prayers at the sacred Ramanathaswamy Temple, highlighting Tamil Nadu’s rich spiritual legacy and its vital place in India’s civilizational history.
India’s First Vertical Lift Sea Bridge
A major highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the New Pamban Bridge, India’s first vertical-lift railway sea bridge. Built at a cost of ₹700+ crore, the bridge stretches 2.08 km and features a 72.5-metre lift span that allows ship movement without halting train services. The bridge embodies a seamless fusion of modern engineering and cultural heritage, significantly improving connectivity between Rameswaram and Mandapam.
Rail and Road Boost for Tamil Nadu
Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated a new train service connecting Rameswaram and Tambaram (Chennai), boosting regional connectivity for pilgrims and tourists alike. Additionally, he laid the foundation stones for multiple National Highway projects, including NH-40, NH-32, NH-36, and NH-332, aimed at enhancing access along important trade corridors and pilgrimage routes. He pointed out that Tamil Nadu’s rail budget has increased sevenfold since 2014 — from ₹900 crore to over ₹6,000 crore.
Empowering Coastal and Rural Communities
Tamil Nadu’s role in India’s Blue Economy was spotlighted, with special emphasis on fishermen welfare. Under the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana, the state has seen investments in seaweed parks and landing centres. PM Modi also mentioned that over 3,700 Indian fishermen have been rescued from Sri Lankan waters in the last decade.
Social Infrastructure and Welfare Gains
The Prime Minister highlighted massive gains in housing and healthcare. More than 12 lakh pucca houses have been built under PM Awas Yojana, while 1.11 crore rural households now have access to tap water. Ayushman Bharat has provided 1 crore treatments, saving Tamil Nadu families ₹8,000 crore. Further, ₹700 crore has been saved via Jan Aushadhi medicine outlets.
Tamil Nadu’s Role in a Developed India
From promoting medical education in Tamil to setting up 11 new medical colleges, the state is advancing both language and learning. Farmers, too, have received a boost — with ₹12,000 crore under PM-KISAN and ₹14,800 crore in crop insurance payouts.
