PM Mitra Park Boosts Textile Growth in Dhar

New textile hub in Madhya Pradesh

PM Mitra Park Boosts Textile Growth in Dhar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM Mitra) Park in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh. The project aims to strengthen India’s textile sector by creating a world-class hub for weaving, spinning, designing, and garment manufacturing.

This marks one of the seven textile parks announced under the PM Mitra scheme, making India self-reliant in textiles and enhancing global competitiveness.

Static GK fact: The textile industry contributes around 2.3% to India’s GDP and 11% to total exports.

Complete textile ecosystem

The Dhar park will function as a self-contained textile ecosystem. It will integrate facilities for spinning, dyeing, processing, designing, and export. The initiative will also provide a single location for cotton and silk processing with advanced quality checks.

Thousands of jobs are expected to emerge, especially for rural and semi-urban youth. This supports the government’s focus on women empowerment and local entrepreneurship.

Static GK fact: India is the world’s second-largest producer of textiles and garments after China.

Revival of Maheshwari sarees

The park also carries deep cultural significance. It revives the heritage of Maheshwari sarees, a tradition started by Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, the queen of Malwa. Inspired by the architecture of Maheshwar fort, these sarees are known for their elegance and light texture.

By connecting artisans to modern markets, the project ensures traditional crafts gain global reach. It promotes Make in India while preserving Madhya Pradesh’s cultural identity.

Static GK Tip: Maheshwar, situated on the banks of the Narmada, has been a historic weaving centre since the 18th century.

Economic and social upliftment

The PM Mitra Park in Dhar is expected to:

  • Provide fair cotton pricing for farmers
  • Improve infrastructure for weavers and artisans
  • Increase textile exports through modern processing units
  • Attract large-scale private investments

The initiative aligns with India’s vision of becoming a global textile hub while reducing dependence on imports. Madhya Pradesh will benefit through job creation, rural income growth, and international recognition.

Static GK fact: Madhya Pradesh ranks among the top cotton-producing states of India.
